Surveillance made easy…..

Surveillance Solutions in today’s business brings about many debatable issues. The fact of the matter it has become a necessary tool. How we go about utilizing the technology is at the heart of the debate.

Cost has always been the first consideration. Where do start? What should you consider? The first step is coming to grips with the need. The second, what additional use can be made of this technology.

In addressing these issues EZ-Toyz.com has opened a showroom in Naperville, IL

Here you can view the different types an styles of each camera. From Domes to Sensor alerts. Also see first hand what the camera actually sees and how images are or are not recorded. As an additional feature EZ-Toyz.com does have the ability to visit your location an display the capabilities of “Remote” accesss through your PC or Smart Phone. They will show you “Live” feeds of PTZ (Point-Tilt-Zoom) cameras and help you understand how you can obtain this technology for less than $2K.

The additional uses is where the creative mind takes over. It’s a camera, it records video.

divine design .. now in convenient search engine form

clip_image002

The latest trend in web development is rich user interface while semantic search rules the roost where knowledge management is concerned.

Enter Powerset, a recent entrant in the search field that has been over a year in the beta stage. Powerset finds answers to your questions on Wikipedia and Freebase, arguably the top free databases on the ‘net.

In addition to being a next-generation semantic search engine, Powerset has also earned the title of “best looking” search engine. See Powerset – the best looking search engine. The site does boast an easy to grasp user interface and clean look.

ed. note – I was one of the original beta testers for Powerset via PowerLabs. I can say from firsthand experience that the company is comprised of really smart people. You know – geeks. Good luck, guys.

docstoc oneclick

mazy's docstoc page_Page_1  my profile page on docstoc

Maybe I’m supposed to be neutral or unbiased or something when I share websites, applications, blogs, and gewgaws; but some start-ups appeal to me more than others. Take docstoc for example. This little company from the West Coast has implemented the kind of document-exchange ideas I was talking about in posts like this. So far they’ve done a hell of a job, becoming the virtual Energizer Bunny® of document exchange sites: they get funded, add features, get more funding, add more features, and so on. Still and all, it is by no means clear that docstoc will be able to overtake general-application early entrants such as google docs and scribd, more specialized document exchange sites such as jd supra, or newer competitors such as acrobat.com (which is cool as hell, I must say).

But true to form, docstoc continues to battle back – this time with a nifty idea called OneClick. In the words of the company, Oneclick allows you to upload document(s) by right clicking on files from your desktop and e-mailing large documents (up to 50 MBs) without having to use attachments.

Of course the question is not good intentions but execution. Granted, I’ve had more than my share of trouble using the docstoc site, but I’ve tried OneClick and so-far-sogood.

Now you give it a shot and tell me what you think. Run the video below to learn more or go directly here to get started.

how I manage these days

Ed. Note: I thought some of you might like to know what applications I use in the office these days and for what.  If you’re not interested then ignore this post. If you are interested or would like to suggest a better alternative, please have a look. – MMH

Internet-based collaboration platforms streamline communications, help keep everyone on the same page, reduce the cost of communications, boost productivity, etc. I currently use a series of simple, inexpensive systems that do the job at the right price ($0 is always the right price). Here they are

http://37signals.com/ (office tools)

37 Signals is legendary. They only invented the signature programming langugae that made Web 2.0 into … well, Web 2.0. Their productivity suite consists of a series of component pieces, any of which can be used alone, and all of which are free up through a certain amount of usage. Even then the charge is modest.  I currently keep contacts, manage my appointments, do my billing, and prepare and send invoices, all through web-based tools like these for about $12/mo.

I also use

www.keeptempo.com (billing and time)

www.blinksale.com (invoicing)

www.rememberthemilk.com (reminders)

www.twitter.com (micro-messages/SMS)

www.jott.com (voice to text)

Of course there are many, many other choices – most of which are feature-rich and at least as attractive (if not more so) than the services listed above. One such alternative is lawyer-specific service Clio which I think will be a big winner.

How about you? What are you using to get things done?

web 2.0 puts the screws to IT

Social computing technologies a/k/a Web 2.0 staples like wikis, blogs, social networking, RSS, and more are making their way into the business world.

This movement, dubbed Enterprise 2.0, is no small shift. But the change encompasses more than just the introduction of social software to the business world – it also relates to the movement of server software from in-house data centers to the cloud, the rise of a mobile workforce, the rebirth of thin client computing, a self-provisioning user base, and more.

IT may never be the same.

This Month's Installment from Cybercontrols

As state and the federal courts continue to weigh in on the infinite possibilities surrounding electronic discovery, the universe of electronically stored information (ESI) demands to be defined. A producing party’s duty to preserve relevant evidence is not the issue. The confusion comes from what types of ESI do these preservation obligations refer to? From a requesting party’s perspective, is there any doubt that relevant evidence pertaining to their case may well go beyond the boundaries of certain documents and e-mail communications? As you read through the recent preservation of evidence order below, you will see just how extensive the universe of ESI preservation can be.

United States District Court, N.D. California, Oakland Division.

In re FLASH MEMORY ANTITRUST LITIGATION.

No. C-07-00086-SBA. April 22, 2008.

Joseph Cotchett, Steven Williams, Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, Burlingame, CA, for the Indirect Purchaser Plaintiffs.

ORDER REGARDING PRESERVATION OF EVIDENCE: SAUNDRA B. ARMSTRONG, District Judge

*1 IT IS HEREBY ORDERED THAT:

All parties and their counsel are reminded of their duty to preserve evidence that may be relevant to this action. The duty extends to documents, data, and tangible things in the possession, custody and control of the parties to this action, and any employees, agents, contractors, carriers, bailees, or other non-parties who possess materials reasonably anticipated to be subject to discovery in this action. “Documents, data, and tangible things” shall be interpreted broadly to include writings, records, files, correspondence, reports, memoranda, calendars, diaries, minutes, electronic messages, voice mail, E-mail, telephone message records or logs, computer and network activity logs, hard drives, backup data, removable computer storage media such as tapes, discs and cards, printouts, document image files, Web pages, databases, spreadsheets, software, books, ledgers, journals, orders, invoices, bills, vouchers, check statements, worksheets, summaries, compilations, computations, charts, diagrams, graphic presentations, drawings, films, charts, digital or chemical process photographs, video, phonographic, tape or digital recordings or transcripts thereof, drafts, jottings and notes, studies or drafts of studies or other similar such material. Information that serves to identify, locate, or link such material, such as file inventories, file folders, indices, and metadata, is also included in this definition. Until the parties reach an agreement on a preservation plan or the Court orders otherwise, each party shall take reasonable steps to preserve all documents, data, and tangible things containing information potentially relevant to the subject mater of this litigation. In addition, counsel shall exercise all reasonable efforts to identify and notify parties and non-parties of their duties, including employees of corporate or institutional parties, to the extent required by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. *Slip Copy, 2008 WL 1831668 (N.D.Cal.)
