Foursquare co-founder on dealing with data overload

Media_httpcdnventureb_aqnvi

Naveen Selvadurai, co-founder of Foursquare, offered up advice at this year’s SXSW conference about living with the constant data bombardment we face every day. In his words, there’s no stopping the data fire hose, but there are ways to cope. After making some suggestions he pointed out that it helps to have a “killer ‘fro like mine; chicks dig it. Well, that plus my millions of dollars. But you know.” Words to live by.

It helps to have a killer ‘fro and live in the fast-lane. Yeah chicks dig that. Sorry, what was the question again …?

iPad2 vs. Competitors … iPad Wins

Media_http8mshcdncomw_ohddq

The helpful infographics in this article compare the iPad 2 against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10, HP Touchpad, and LG G-Slate. As for me, Of course I’ve already ordered my iPad 2 so … I guess you could say I’ve made a comitment. And come to think of it you can suck it iPad wanna-be’s. Actually,I had my reasons for passing on the Xoom’s promise of “4G speeds” and reduced form factor of the Tab. Actualy, I had 65,000 reasons for picking the iPad2 – coincidentally the # of available apps. That’s a hell of a lead – the kind that makes it worthwhile to stick with the leader.

Did you hear? Apple released a new product!

This is where I would normally shoot down the product identified in the title of this post, but I have a confession to make: when it comes to the iPad 2 I’m one of the pod people .. so to speak. Yeah, I’m a rabid fanboy. So while there has been plenty of noise this past week – both pro and con – about the iPad 2, I am most convinced by articles like this one on Techcrunch written by people who were already fans of the first iPad. Why? Because they were the ones most likely to be disappointed if the product fell short of the hype. So what was the author’s take in this case? Let’s put it this way: I’m getting one in white and one in traditional silver/black. They should be here at the end of next week. Then I’ll write my own review.

Xoom Xoom … Zoom?

Articles like this one have been popping up to deliver the news that the Motorola Xoom must be upgraded in order to reach so-called 4G speeds (but see this post on why “4G” isn’t really 4G). That’s a little surprising, since the Xoom specifically differentiates itself from competitors like the iPad b/c it has “built it 4G.”

The kicker? To update the device users will need to part with it for about 10 days. In other words, if Apple was worried about its announcement of the iPad2 next week being overshadowed by the Xoom then … wait, who am I kidding? Apple was never worried.

Ed. Note – Hey Motorola, way to set the bar for tablet devices, then fail to clear it.

Xoom – $600 w/2-Yr. Verizon Contract

As the Tablet Wars cross-pollinate with battles between cell carriers like Verizon, ATT, and T-Mobile, expect the same price-point footsie you saw when the iPhone came out (remember how jazzed you were to pay $600 for one in 2007?).  And here’s the first salvo in that battle – snag the Motorola Xoom running Android’s Honeycomb OS for $800 at retail (viz the iPad’s price-point) or drop your pants for a 2-year contract and save $200. Such a deal!
