ABA TechShow 2011

As most readers know, I write a column for NYC-based TechnoLawyer called SmallLaw (formerly known as, no joke, “Crazy Mazy”). Anyhow, as TechnoLawyer’s intrepid Chicago reporter I’ve written about the ABA TechShow since 2008; and before that for this blog.

Here are the 12 videos we shot at this year’s TechShow. Feel free to subscribe to my YouTube Channel for more legal tech news and check out my TechnoLawyer pieces as well.

Now it’s a party …

Pets_com_puppet1

Recently posts like this one have speculated that we may be experiencing yet another bubble. If you’re playing our home game you know that’s bubble #3; the dot-com boondoggle, the Web 2.0 inflate-a-thon, and now … Color.

What is Color? A photo-sharing App with wrinkles like automatically merging photos with those of every other user within 150 feet. Bam! Instant photo network with total strangers. That’s not creepy.

Business models aside however, here’s the thing. Color just came out, has never made a dime, and may never work out. But it just got $41,000,000 in venture capital funding. Sound familiar? Does Pets.com ring any bells? Netscape? Webvan? Kozmo? Flooz? Gov.com?

All coming back to you? Maybe it’s time to put your money into something stable like Tulip Bulbs.

Xoom Xoom … Zoom?

Articles like this one have been popping up to deliver the news that the Motorola Xoom must be upgraded in order to reach so-called 4G speeds (but see this post on why “4G” isn’t really 4G). That’s a little surprising, since the Xoom specifically differentiates itself from competitors like the iPad b/c it has “built it 4G.”

The kicker? To update the device users will need to part with it for about 10 days. In other words, if Apple was worried about its announcement of the iPad2 next week being overshadowed by the Xoom then … wait, who am I kidding? Apple was never worried.

Ed. Note – Hey Motorola, way to set the bar for tablet devices, then fail to clear it.

Google Maps 5.0 (Android)

As a loyal iPhone user and Mac-head this is not easy for me; but here goes.  Google Maps for Android 5.0 looks amazing. Frankly I think that much of what Google does these days is a footnote to its search and advertising empire … but this is potentially huge. And when a company can actually say that it offers 3D real-time mapping on a mobile phone, well, they’re entitled to their accomplishment as a game changer. So check out this video for a closer look at the technology and prepare to be seriously impress.

P.S. Apple, please take the hint. iPhone is beginning to look a little shabby here. Be careful or Google may eat your lunch … again.
